In case there is any confusion, although the proposed high-speed rail system that was slated to connect Orlando to Tampa in the first leg of a statewide system is now off the table, our region's quest to build a commuter rail system is still underway. That project, known as SunRail, would span a 61-mile route that will ultimately link Volusia to Osceola Counties, primarily along the I-4 Corridor.
At the current time, Florida Governor Scott is reviewing SunRail's contracts and funding agreements for final approval. His decision is expected in early July. In the meantime, supporters of the project continue work to build understanding of the long-term economic and environmental benefits of commuter rail for the entire state of Florida. I do believe that the Sun Rail is a good thing. It will be along the I-4 Corridor where all the theme parks are. With the massive amount of people who drive I-4 for their jobs at the parks will start taking the train. This will increase sales of houses in outlying areas and reduce traffic along I-4.
This is a major need right now with the upcoming expansion for I-4. Plan are there and ready to be implemented. The current economy have put them on hold temporally.
