DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – April 13, 2011 – Iowa Realty is urging its real estate agents to review their safety efforts following the shooting death of a co-worker during an open house in West Des Moines.

Twenty-seven-year-old Ashley Okland was killed last Friday. Police are continuing their investigation. No suspect has been identified.

Iowa Realty has posted a safety website for agents to help them examine ways to better protect themselves as agents consider ramping up open houses again.

Les Sulgrove of the Des Moines Area Association of Realtors says the group is making similar recommendations to its members. Each agency will determine how it handles open houses.

This is important.  Please post some ideas on how people can be safe.

1) Be respectful of others.  If people respected others there would be less crime.  There would also be much less violence.  Tolerance is the key.

2) Let people know where you are.  Let guests know that others know where you are and expect you to contact them shortly.

3) Put out some Nanny cams out.  A teddy bear with cameras in it for example.  Other objects can also have cameras in them.  a) Let people in your office know a few of them and your b) friends know a few different ones and c) Family know a few different ones.  Let each group know not to tell others about them.  WHen you get there unpack them and take them with your when you leave.

4) Use common sense

5) Have a partner with you.

6) TAKE SELF DEFENCE CLASSES.  Learn to defend yourself.  It does not take long for something to happen.  Before you know it you are already in trouble.  Be Prepared.

7) Let the neighbors of the house around the open house know you're there and to keep an eye out.

8) Dash camera that takes video or pics every few seconds and park on the street a house or two down.

Remember This.  I love you.  I want you to be safe.  I really want the best for you.
