WASHINGTON – April 18, 2011 – The Bureau of Labor and Statistics confirms that there were 75 deaths per year on average in the real estate, rental and leasing field between 2003 and 2009.
Safety and Security Force owner Tracey Hawkins – who created the Real Estate Agent Safety for Distress Properties program – says the recession made it more dangerous for realty professionals working with distressed or vacant properties, as they may run into squatters, disgruntled former owners, abandoned pets and meth labs, among other dangers.
Real estate agents are vulnerable to crime because they announce open houses on social media sites, allowing criminals to stalk them.
Hawkins urges agents to meet with clients for the first time in their office where they have colleagues present, retain a copy of the client’s driver’s license, make sure someone knows where they are at all times, listen to their instincts, and call 911 if they feel unsafe.
